Everwild: Everything we know about the new game from Rare
Everwšild is a beautiful upcoming adventure game where naturaš”l and human worlds collide

Everwild is a new adventure currently in the works from 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:Sea of Thieves developer Rare, and it looks to be every fantasy fan's dream come true. Since its initial announcement all the way back in 2019, we've gotten a handful of exciting snippets of information about the project. However, as wÜ«e move further into 2025, it's been relatively quiet on the Everwild front.
But, despite the slowdown of major updates, don't worry, there's still plenty for us to unpack. There have been some Everwild teases in past showcases, including some dev commentary back in 2020; a report then surfaced a year later in 2021 that 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·šē åå²ę„询:Everwild had allegedly been rebooted. Now, in 2025, we've even heard news of work stiź¦ll being done on the title, sparking new hope for a speedy release for Rare's new IP.
No one can deny that Everwild is certainly one of the most intriguing 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:upcoming Xbox Series X games coming to us from the 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:Xbox Game Studios family. And since it promises to deliver , we can't wait to find out more. So, while we await more news, read below for a recap of everź§ything we know so far about the potential Everwild release date, gameplay, trailer, and more.
This Everwild game hub was updated on May 8, ensuring that allā the information collected here is the most up-to-date news we have from Rare.
What is Everwild?
Everwild is the next game from British studio Rare, which is currently owned by 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:Microsoft.
Founded by the Stamper brothers in 1985, the studio has been crafting innovative games for more than three decades, with someź¦ highlights including GoldenEye, Donkey Kong Cošuntry, Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day. Following the Microsoft acquisition in 2002, Rare has been developing mostly exclusive titles for Xbox consoles, with modern examples like the Kinect Sports series, Viva Piñata, and most recently, Sea of Thieves.
Constantly pivoting into new genres and toying with ambitious ideas, Rare is a studio that is hard to pin down, but its latest new IP, Everwild, would be easy to compare to Sea of Thieves, at least from looks alone. Taking the trailers and marketing copy into account, we could assume it is a similar style of game - an emergent MMO - framed in a fantasy universe, but the jury is still out until we hear more about it, hopefully at this year's E3, whatever form that𤔠may take. Development on the game is being led by studio veteran Louise O'Connor, who previously worked on Fable Legends and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
Everwild release date speculation
The Everwild release date has yet to be announced. However, we are still hoping for at least a 2026 release window.

The game was announced during the XO19 event in November of 2019, as a shock reveal from Microsoft, unexpected by fans given Rare's commitment to Sea of Thieves. After years with no updates, in February 2025, 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:Xbox boss Phil ź¦Spencer gave us some news šwhąµ²ile speaking on the Xbox Era podcast (spotted by ).
"It's nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they're making," he says. "It has been [a while]. And we've been able to give those teams time in what they're doing, which is good, and still have a portfolio like we have," he said. "It's like a dream that Matt [Booty, head of 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:Xbox Game Studios] and I āØhave had for a long time, so it's finally good to be there. We can give thoseąµ² teams time."
Spencer's comments indicate that the game still needs time, so we aren't betting on a 2025 release at the moment. However, this is speculation on our part, so stay tuned for more concrete updates. In the meantime, we do know that Everwild is coming to Xbox Game Pass as an 澳擲幸čæ5å¼å„å·ē åå²ę„询:Xbox Series X exclusive.
Everwild platforms
Everwild was confirmed to be an Xbox exclusive title during its trailer (which you can watch for yourself above). This means that once it releases, we'll see the game on Xbox Series X/Sš consoles and likely PC as well.
Along with the platform news, this teaser is a real sight to behold. Every frame could be its own paintiā±ng, perfectly encapsulating the magic the studio has ešvoked in its painterly representation of nature in all its forms.
We're still unclear on what Everwild's gameplay will look like in action, however, though this cinematic does suggest the focus will be on exploration, and interacting with the unšiverse's pantheon of creatures. The accompanying blog post confirms that Everwild is indeed "inspired by the beauty of the natural world around us", where players take on the role of "an Eternal as you explore and build bonds with the world around you."
Everwild story - Eternals, mystical creatures, and symbiotic relationships
Like a lot of things about Everwild, the game's story is vague, but equally intriguing. Tš¦he devs at Rare provided a for the Xbox Game Showcase 2020 trailer, confirming a number of key details about the world's lore and creatušres.
First and foremost, we know the player characters in Everwild are called Eternals, and they look like fairly standard adventuring humans. The creatures you interact with, on the other hand, range from slightly unusual to downright bizarre. Curiously, we haven't seen any actual Everwild combat from Rā¦are, as the studio has been focusing on the peaceful interactions players will have with the various creatures. Rare even described your connection with Everwild's animals as "symbiotic," and we see some of those moments in the trailer.
Obvšiously, that doesn't tell us everything we need to know about Everwild's story, but it does suggest themes around nature and our connection to the lanš°d and its inhabitants.
Everwild X019 trailer - What can we learn?
You can check out the Everwild trailer above. The trailer introduces us to a bustling fantasšy world with a rich color palette. It's also full of intriguing creatures, from bunnies to deer and majestic birds. There seems to be some sort of supernatural spin on the creatures, who boast leafy appendages and huddle in packs across a series of peculiar biomes.
The humans šwho inhabit this land (whom we assume will function as the protagonists in Everwild) always appear in awe of these creatures as if they are completely subservient to them. The human characters lurk and spy on the various creatures, with some looking far more hostile than others, like the warthog and sabretooth tiger featured in the trailer.
Everwild gameplay
It's difficult to infer what the gameplay of Everwild will be from this trailer. There's no conflict to be seen, though it suggests that there will be some sort of multiplayer element given that the humans move in groups whilst studying these animals. At the end of the trailer, onšŗe human character connects with an animal, resulting in some kind of magical awakening. Perhaps it’s a game following an early civilization as they figure out the meaning behind the animals who inhabit the land they find themselves in.
It's all still very much up in the air, so hopefully, we'll hear more soon. Studio Head Craig Duncan kept his cards to his chest in an interview with Eurogamer around the timšøe of Everwild's reveal, where he called it a "very unique type of game," and explained the philosophy at Rare that led to the game's creation. Duncan notes that it's about "putting a set of passionate people togetheār making something they truly love and believe in. That's why Everwild will be the game it will be."
He was similarly cryptic in a blog post on the Rare website, where Duncan states that the game is "still in early development" but that the team is "focused on building an experience that allows for new ways to play in a natural and magical world." Accordiš ng to Duncan, Everwild will be "more than just a new IP," and he later waxes about the fact that the meaningful experiences it offers will be "for players everywhere to share."
It's fair to say that Rare is being tight-lipped about the makeup of its world, potentially waiting for an opportunity to showcase its gameplay properly when it is further along the conveyor belt. It's been quite some time since we've heard much more, but in October 2024, Xbox head Phil Speną²cer paid a visÜ«it to Rare and played Everwild - while he didn't elaborate much āmore on than that, it's a promising sign.
