To celebrate the release of ’s latest animation on 2 August, we’re going to have a daily rummage through the Spirited Away studio’s magical history
G is for Grave Of The Fireflies
Originally released in 1988 as a double-bill with My Neighbour Totoro , received a celebratory 25th anniversary rerelease earlier this year. The starkly anti-war film follows the orphaned siblings Seito and Setsuko as they struggle to survive in a war-torn Japan. Told in flashback as their spirits rise from ashes, Grave Of The Fireflies is nothing short of heart-breaking in its depiction of the effects of war on the individual and children. A real challenge is trying to sit through the entire film without breaking into tea♌rs: a true milestone in Ghibli’s rise to prominence.
